Sinopsis
La difteria es una infección bacteriana altamente contagiosa causada por Corynebacterium diphtheriae, conocida por producir una toxina potente que puede causar inflamación grave y daño al tracto respiratorio, la piel, el corazón y los nervios. Afecta con mayor frecuencia la garganta y las vías respiratorias superiores, formando una membrana gruesa y gris que puede obstruir la respiración y provocar complicaciones potencialmente mortales.
Aunque alguna vez fue una causa importante de enfermedad y muerte en todo el mundo, la difteria se ha vuelto poco frecuente en los países desarrollados debido a la vacunación infantil de rutina (DTaP o Tdap). Sin embargo, los brotes aún ocurren en áreas con baja cobertura de vacunación o higiene deficiente.
