1. Identity and Botanical Classification

Taxonomy and Nomenclature

Goldenrod refers principally to Solidago virgaurea L. (European goldenrod, also called Woundwort), a member of the family Asteraceae, and among the most widely used and researched species of its genus in Europe. The genus Solidago encompasses over 100 recognized species, but from a medicinal and regulatory standpoint, only a few are pharmacopoeially recognised. The European Pharmacopoeia accepts two equivalent species, Solidago canadensis L. and S. gigantea Aiton, as goldenrod (Solidaginis herba). The ESCOP (European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy) monograph covers Solidago virgaurea L. specifically. According to the American Botanical Council, other common names in use include Solidago, Virgaurea, Woundwort, Aaron's rod, and Yellowweed.

The Latin name Solidago, which means "to make whole" or "to consolidate," reflects the plant's long reputation as a medicinal herb. The plant was known in medieval times to Arnaud de Villeneuve as la verge d'or or virga aurea, which may explain why the alternative botanical name Solidago virga-aurea Linn. is still sometimes encountered.

Botanical Description and Natural Distribution

Goldenrod is a tall, golden-yellow flowering plant that blooms in late summer and early fall, growing in open fields, roadsides, and meadows across North America and Europe. The polytypic species European goldenrod is spread over large parts of Europe, Asia (with the exception of the subtropical part), North Africa, and North America. Native to North America, goldenrod was introduced to Europe in the 17th century, where it quickly naturalized, invading meadows and wastelands.

Pharmacopoeial Drug Definition and Common Preparations

By pharmacopoeial definition, the herbal drug consists of the whole or fragmented, dried, flowering aerial parts of Solidago virgaurea L. Most commonly used in phytotherapy are the apical shoots of goldenrod, known as Herba Solidaginis. The highest content of active ingredients is found in the leaves and flowers of the plant. Goldenrod is commercially available in several forms: dried herb (for infusion/tea), hydroalcoholic tinctures, standardised dry extracts in capsule or tablet form, and as a component of multi-herb combination products. It is also found in toothpaste formulations in some markets.


2. Historical and Traditional Uses

Medieval Europe

S. virgaurea has a diversity of medicinal uses in the territories where it is spread. Its most widely known ethnopharmacological uses are related to kidney disorders (being often found in teas intended to help pass kidney calculi), urinary tract infections, the overactive bladder syndrome, and prostatic diseases, with urologic uses of the plant going back at least to the writings of Arnold von Villanova (1240–1311). In the Middle Ages, Herba Solidaginis was applied for nephrolithiasis, urinary tract, and prostate diseases, while the flowers and leaves were also used as natural yellow dyes.

In German folk medicine, goldenrod was used for the treatment of urinary retention, kidney stones, and hemorrhoids. Another vernacular German name, Unsegenkraut (curse herb), indicated belief in its magical abilities, reflecting an era when disease was often attributed to metaphysical causes. Since the middle of the 19th century, its use was slowly forgotten in Germany, to be revived only relatively recently with the renewed interest in herbal therapy.

The European variety S. virgaurea was used topically as a wound medicine, its astringent quality helping close wounds and prevent infection. It was commonly employed in diseases of the lower urinary tract including infections, inflammations, and urinary or kidney calculi. Europeans also exploited its astringent qualities internally in cases of diarrhea, cough, chronic catarrh of the lungs, spitting of blood from the lungs, and gum ulcers.

The herbalist Nicholas Culpeper noted the diuretic and antilithic effect—"whereby also the gravel and stone may be voided"—and highlighted its use as a styptic: "it stays bleeding in any part of the body…the bloody-flux and women's courses," indicating use for dysentery and menorrhagia. Mrs. Grieve, writing in The Modern Herbal (1931), agreed that goldenrod is helpful for painful and heavy periods and stated that a warm infusion is a good diaphoretic, noting its historical use in cases of diphtheria.

Native American Traditions

Historically, Canadian goldenrod (S. canadensis) played an important role in various cultures, particularly among Native American tribes, where the plant was used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and antiseptic properties. Native American communities utilized goldenrod for respiratory complaints, wound healing, and as a general wellness tonic. The Iroquois, for example, prepared an infusion of goldenrod flowers (specifically Canadian goldenrod) as a gastrointestinal and liver aid. Native peoples also brewed it as tea and used it as a poultice for insect bites and skin infections.

Colonial America

During the American Revolution, colonists brewed a drink called "Liberty Tea" from goldenrod after boycotting British tea imports. This use established goldenrod's cultural significance in early American domestic life beyond purely medicinal contexts.

External and Miscellaneous Traditional Uses

In folk medicine, Solidago galenic remedies were used for diseases of the kidneys, urinary tract, and liver; externally, goldenrod was used to treat purulent wounds, furunculosis, and gum abscesses as washes and compresses. Historically, goldenrod has also been used to treat tuberculosis, diabetes, enlargement of the liver, gout, hemorrhoids, internal bleeding, and asthma; in folk medicine it was used as a mouth rinse to treat inflammation of the mouth and throat.


3. Key Constituents and Active Compounds

Primary Chemical Classes

The main chemical constituents of S. virgaurea are flavonoids (mainly derived from quercetin and kaempferol), C6–C1 and C6–C3 compounds, terpenes (mostly from the essential oil), and a large number of saponin molecules (mainly virgaureasaponins and solidagosaponins). Depending on the type of plant, Solidaginis herba contains 1 to 4% flavonoids, saponins, phenylglycosides, tannins, and an essential oil with around 90 mono- and sesquiterpenes.

Important phenolic constituents include 3,5-dicaffeoyl quinic acid, neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, leiocarposide, and virgaureoside. Oleanane-type triterpene saponins, the virgaureasaponins, based on polygalic acid; clerodane diterpenes known as solidagoic acids; flavonoids based on quercetin and kaempferol; and chlorogenic acid derivatives have all been isolated from the herb.

Species-Specific Flavonoid Profiles

In S. gigantea, the flavonoid profile is dominated by quercetin glycosides, with quercitrin as the major compound. In S. canadensis, quercetin and kaempferol rutinosides are the two major constituents; caffeoylquinic acids (CQAs) are less diverse, with 5-CQA as the main compound.

Essential Oil Composition

The principal compounds of the essential oil from the flowering tops of S. canadensis are α-pinene (20.36%), β-copaene (16.16%), bornyl acetate (10.45%), D-limonene (8.21%), and β-elemene (6.80%). In S. canadensis dry extracts, 20 phenolics (10 flavonoids, 8 hydroxycinnamic acids, and 2 phenolic acids) and 14 amino acids (7 of which are essential) have been identified and quantified.

Saponins

Numerous secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, triterpenoids, saponins, phenolic acids, glucosides, polysaccharides, diterpenes, and essential oils have been reported in the genus Solidago. The virgaureasaponins and solidagosaponins are among the most pharmacologically studied saponins, with demonstrated immunomodulatory and antitumoral activities in laboratory models.


4. Established Mechanisms of Action

Diuretic Activity

Goldenrod contains chemicals that might increase urine flow and reduce swelling, and it may also kill bacteria and fungi. Despite the traditional use of Solidago canadensis L. as a diuretic drug, there is still some scarcity in scientific data concerning the specific class of constituents responsible for this diuretic action. The diuretic effect is thought to be attributable to a combination of flavonoids (particularly the quercetin and kaempferol derivatives), saponins, and phenolic glycosides acting via multiple pathways rather than a single mechanism.

Anti-Inflammatory Activity

Investigations in molecular pharmacology have revealed new mechanisms responsible for the biological effects of goldenrod extracts. The preparations exhibit a complex action spectrum that is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, diuretic, antispasmodic, and analgesic. In vitro studies demonstrate that single extracts of S. virgaurea are active as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents; however, when combined with P. tremula and F. excelsior (as in the Phytodolor® formulation), the combination is more effective than the individual components.

Antispasmodic Activity

Laboratory research (animal and in vitro models) has demonstrated that goldenrod extracts can inhibit bladder smooth muscle contractions. Research published in Naunyn Schmiedebergs Archives of Pharmacology demonstrated that extracts from Rhois aromatica and Solidaginis virgaurea inhibit rat and human bladder contraction.

Antimicrobial and Antifungal Activity

Goldenrod contains antibacterial clerodane diterpenes. A water extract of Solidago virgaurea has been shown to inhibit Candida albicans yeast in vitro. More specifically, the S. virgaurea extract was shown to inhibit both laboratory and clinical C. albicans isolates' adherence and hyphal transition without affecting viability and growth of planktonic yeasts; RT-PCR experiments demonstrated that key genes involved in adhesion and hyphal morphological switch—including Hwp1p, Ece1p, and Als3p—were strongly down-regulated by the extract.

Antioxidant Activity

Published research on S. virgaurea confirms antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, spasmolytic, antihypertensive, diuretic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, cytotoxic and antitumor, antimutagenic, antiadipogenic, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, and antisenescence activities in experimental models. These findings are largely from in vitro or animal studies and must be distinguished from human clinical evidence.


5. Scientific Evidence by Area of Use

5.1 Urinary Tract Health (Diuresis, Urinary Tract Infections, Urolithiasis)

This is the area with the strongest regulatory and clinical backing for goldenrod. The HMPC has classified European goldenrod herb as a traditional herbal medicinal product; ESCOP's indication is for irrigation of the urinary tract, especially in cases of inflammation and kidney stones, and as an adjuvant in the treatment of bacterial infections of the urinary tract. The German Commission E monograph indicates goldenrod for irrigation of inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract, urinary stones, and renal gravel, including prevention in cases of tendency to urinary stones and renal gravel.

The EMA's HMPC concluded that, on the basis of long-standing use, Solidago virgaurea herba (goldenrod), including in combination with nettle leaf, can be used in minor complaints affecting the urinary tract to increase production of urine in order to achieve flushing of the urinary tract.

In terms of human clinical data, open, non-randomised studies indicate that goldenrod can effectively treat infectious cystitis and functional urinary tract conditions, such as overactive bladder syndrome, within 2–4 weeks. The EMA assessment report for Solidago virgaurea L. Herba describes an open multicentre post-marketing study in 53 patients with symptoms of urinary-tract inflammation who were given an ethanolic extract of European goldenrod. Adverse events in these studies were uncommon and mild, limited to mild gastrointestinal upset or allergic reactions; accordingly, goldenrod extract was concluded to be safely incorporable into treatment plans for urinary tract disorders, improving recovery and lowering recurrence rates.

Limitations: Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild antimicrobial activity; clinical studies, though limited, suggest potential benefits in urinary tract health, with a few small-scale human trials indicating that goldenrod extract may increase urine flow and help alleviate mild lower urinary tract symptoms, particularly when used as part of combination formulas. From a mainstream clinical evidence standpoint, goldenrod is used for enlarged prostate, kidney stones, and urinary tract infections, but there is no definitive high-quality evidence from large randomized controlled trials to fully support these uses. The regulatory acceptance is therefore based on the "traditional use" framework rather than "well-established medicinal use."

5.2 Musculoskeletal / Anti-Rheumatic Activity (Phytodolor® / STW 1)

Goldenrod features as one of three ingredients in Phytodolor® (STW 1), a proprietary standardised combination. STW 1 (Phytodolor®) contains a fixed combination of extracts from aspen leaves and bark (Populus tremula), common ash bark (Fraxinus excelsior), and goldenrod herb (Solidago virgaurea); it belongs to the group of anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic drugs, and is authorised for the treatment of painful disorders of degenerative and inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The mode of action of STW 1 includes anti-inflammatory, antioedematous, antioxidative, and analgesic properties; open clinical studies and randomised, placebo- or verum-controlled double-blind trials performed in different subtypes of rheumatic diseases confirm the pharmacological evidence of efficacy, including by reducing the intake of NSAIDs.

In the clinical trial programme for Phytodolor®, nine double-blind trials were carried out versus placebo; in four of these, patients were permitted to take additionally up to 6 × 25 mg diclofenac per day for pain control. Seven further double-blind and single-blind studies tested the efficacy of STW1 against 3 × 25 mg diclofenac (in 3 studies up to 6 × 25 mg diclofenac per day); one single-blind study and one double-blind study compared STW1 to 75–150 mg indomethacin daily; and one double-blind study compared it to 1 × 20 mg piroxicam per day. Study populations included people suffering from musculoskeletal pain including osteoarthritis, chronic epicondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and various other rheumatic diseases.

Important caveat: While the single extract of S. virgaurea is active as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, S. virgaurea shows the lowest level of inhibition among the three components in the combination. The clinical evidence for goldenrod alone in musculoskeletal disease is therefore weaker than for the combination product.

5.3 Oral Health / Antifungal (Candida albicans)

A randomized, double-blind clinical study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of a fluorinated toothpaste containing S. virgaurea extract (Bucovia™). Sixty-six subjects (SV group n = 33 vs. control n = 33) brushed their teeth twice a day for a 4-week period. Supragingival dental plaque was sampled and analysed by quantitative PCR. In the intervention group, there was a statistically significant decrease in total bacterial load, Streptococcus mutans, and C. albicans. This study was limited to 66 subjects and a 4-week observation period. These results are encouraging but preliminary, and larger, longer-duration trials are needed to confirm clinical significance.

5.4 Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, and Other Activities (Preclinical Evidence)

A few animal and test-tube studies suggest goldenrod may help reduce inflammation, relieve muscle spasms, fight infections, and lower blood pressure. Aqueous/alcoholic extracts of Populus tremula, Solidago virgaurea, and Fraxinus excelsior were tested individually and in combination for anti-inflammatory activity using carrageenan-induced edema and adjuvant-induced arthritis of the rat paw. The tested combinations as well as the individual extracts significantly reduced paw edema and dose-dependently inhibited arthritic paw volume; the anti-inflammatory activity of the combinations was comparable to tested doses of diclofenac. These are animal data and cannot be directly extrapolated to clinical outcomes in humans.

A mouse model has indicated goldenrod to be promising as an antineoplastic agent with minimal toxicities, and goldenrod has displayed an anti-obesity effect through regulation of adipogenesis and lipogenesis pathways in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. These findings are preclinical only.


6. Body Systems and Health Areas

  • Urinary/Renal System: Dried above-ground parts of goldenrod are used to treat inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract and as a preventative measure for urinary stones and kidney gravel.
  • Musculoskeletal System: In empirical medicine, goldenrod is used as an adjuvant for rheumatic complaints, stone disease, gout, and arthritis.
  • Skin and Wound Healing: Historically, goldenrod has been used on the skin to heal wounds.
  • Oral Cavity: Goldenrod extracts have been investigated for reduction of oral Candida and bacterial load in clinical study.
  • Respiratory System: Traditional herbal actions attributed to goldenrod include anticatarrhal activity (removal of excess mucus from the respiratory tract) as well as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, astringent, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, and vulnerary properties.
  • Digestive System: Folk use has included goldenrod for gastrointestinal complaints, flatulence (carminative use), and as a liver aid.

7. Dosage Forms and Reported Dosages

Pharmacopoeial and Monograph Dosages

The usual daily dose reported in phytotherapy references is between 6 and 12 g. The drug is used for infusions and other galenic preparations for oral ingestion. The ESCOP monograph (2003) and PDR (2000) cite a single dose of dried herb of 2–4 g; a single dose in the Bader monograph is listed as 3–5 g. A daily dose of 6–12 g is recommended by the German Commission E, with the same range proposed by the PDR (2000).

As a tea infusion, sources recommend drinking a cup of European goldenrod tea 2 to 4 times a day between meals, with the average daily dose being 10 to 20 g of drug. This wider range reflects differences across specific preparation sources and manufacturers.

Phytodolor® (STW 1) Dosage

The standardised Phytodolor® combination contains 60 mL extract of fresh bark and leaves of Populus tremula, 20 mL extract of fresh bark of Fraxinus excelsior, and 20 mL extract of fresh Solidago virgaurea, each as 60 vol.% ethanolic extracts. The recommended daily dose is 20 to 30 drops 3–4 times daily (up to 40 drops in severe cases). Actual regimens used in clinical trials were: 3 × 30 drops/day at half, normal, and double strength; 3 × 40 drops/day; and 2 × 2 tablets/day (each tablet equivalent to 50 drops).

Duration of Use

In clinical trials of the Phytodolor® combination, treatment duration ranged from two to four weeks. Studies of goldenrod for urinary tract conditions reported effects within 2–4 weeks. Long-term safety data for continuous use beyond these durations in clinical settings are limited. For urinary irrigation therapy, adequate fluid intake is advised alongside the preparation.


8. Safety Considerations and Interactions

General Tolerability

Goldenrod preparations with a complex action spectrum (anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, diuretic, antispasmodic, analgesic) are generally considered safe at reasonable doses and have not shown drug-related side-effects in reported studies. In clinical studies, adverse events were uncommon and mild, limited to mild gastrointestinal upset or allergic reactions.

Contraindications

Goldenrod is contraindicated in cases where it is recommended to reduce fluid intake, such as severe cardiac or renal diseases. It is contraindicated in edema due to heart failure or kidney failure, since the diuretic effect causes mainly water, not salt, to be excreted.

Asteraceae Family Allergy

Goldenrod may cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to the Asteraceae/Compositae family, which includes ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and daisies. Although rare, goldenrod has caused allergic contact dermatitis after both handling and oral administration; those with Asteraceae allergies should exercise caution with goldenrod. An extensive cross-reactivity among different individual species of the genus can be expected, as well as to a certain degree among members of the Asteraceae family. However, cross-reactivity between ragweed and goldenrod specifically is minor.

Latex Cross-Reactivity

People who are allergic to latex might also be allergic to goldenrod; therefore avoidance is recommended in confirmed latex allergy. The leaves are reported to have a high latex content, which may be an important occupational sensitiser. Evidence suggests that goldenrod has a high latex content, and a clinical case involving a florist with both goldenrod and latex allergy has been documented and investigated.

Occupational Sensitization

Anecdotal evidence suggests that asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic conjunctivitis are common following exposure to pollen from goldenrod, particularly in an occupational setting such as that of flower sellers; however, few specific studies have been reported to date.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking goldenrod during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and avoidance is the prudent course. As no safety data in children are available, products containing Solidago virgaurea L. cannot be recommended for use in children.

Drug Interactions

Goldenrod may increase the effects of thiazide diuretics (e.g., bendroflumethiazide, chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone) by pharmacodynamic synergism, though these interactions are classified as minor and of unknown clinical significance. A theoretical mild interaction with diuretic medications is noted. A further theoretical concern exists in hypertension management: goldenrod might increase the amount of sodium in the body, which could potentially worsen high blood pressure.

The Ragweed Confusion

Contrary to popular belief, goldenrod does not cause hay fever; its pollen grains, carried by pollinating insects, are much heavier than those of ragweed and other plants with airborne pollens associated with hay fever. Ragweed is generally worse for allergies than goldenrod: while both plants bloom at the same time, ragweed pollen is more allergenic and airborne, causing more widespread allergic reactions.

Identity and Adulteration Concerns

Goldenrod is native to Europe, northwest Asia, and the Americas; adulteration with other Solidago species in commercial preparations is possible and should be borne in mind when evaluating herbal product quality.
