Sinopsis

Causas Comunes:

  • Dieta baja en fibra

  • Ingesta inadecuada de líquidos

  • Estilo de vida sedentario

  • Ignorar el impulso de defecar

  • Uso excesivo de laxantes estimulantes

  • Medicamentos (opioides, antidepresivos, antiácidos con calcio o aluminio)

  • Hipotiroidismo

  • Diabetes

  • Enfermedades neurológicas (Parkinson's, MS, accidente cerebrovascular)

Boswellia serrata resin contains boswellic acids that inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, reducing leukotriene synthesis — a key mediator of nasal mucosal inflammation and mucus hypersecretion in rhinitis. Clinical evidence supports its use in perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis. A 2023 randomized case-control study (PMC10142908) found a supplement containing Boswellia significantly reduced rhinorrhea and nasal hyperemia in chronic sinusitis patients versus steroid-alone control.

  • boswellic acidCientífico

Boswellic acids are the active triterpenic constituents of Boswellia serrata that selectively inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, reducing pro-inflammatory leukotrienes that drive nasal mucosal edema and mucus hypersecretion in rhinitis. Clinical evidence from chronic sinusitis trials shows reduced rhinorrhea and mucosal inflammation when boswellic acid formulations are used adjunctively. This mechanistic and clinical evidence is the same as for Boswellia resin.

  • Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme from pineapple, reduces nasal mucosal inflammation and thins mucus secretions implicated in post-nasal drip. Multiple clinical studies document faster recovery from sinusitis symptoms, including nasal discharge, compared to standard or placebo treatments. A 2014 pilot study in chronic rhinosinusitis patients showed improved total symptom scores and rhinoscopy scores. A 2023 PMC case-control study found significant reduction in rhinorrhea and nasal hyperemia when bromelain was added to standard therapy.

  • butterburCientífico

Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) extract, standardized to petasins, is one of the most clinically validated herbal treatments for allergic rhinitis, a major cause of post-nasal drip. Multiple RCTs show it is comparable in efficacy to second-generation antihistamines (cetirizine) for reducing rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal congestion. A postmarketing study of 580 patients found 90% improvement in SAR symptoms including rhinorrhea.

  • peraCientífico

Curcumin, the principal bioactive polyphenol of turmeric, reduces allergic rhinitis symptoms including rhinorrhea and nasal congestion associated with post-nasal drip. A pilot study published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology found curcumin reduced nasal airflow resistance and improved sneezing and runny nose in perennial allergic rhinitis patients. Its mechanism involves NF-κB inhibition and reduced Th2 cytokine production driving mucus hypersecretion.

  • eucalyptusCientífico

Eucalyptus oil and its principal active compound 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) have robust clinical evidence for reducing mucus production and nasal inflammation in rhinosinusitis. A placebo-controlled RCT in 152 patients with acute rhinosinusitis showed 1,8-cineole capsules (600 mg/day for 7 days) significantly reduced symptom sum-scores including nasal secretion and obstruction. Ex vivo models confirm cineole reduces mucin gene expression (MUC2, MUC19) in nasal tissue.

  • Ginger extract has been shown in a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial (BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, 2020) to be equally effective as loratadine in reducing total nasal symptom scores in allergic rhinitis patients. Over 6 weeks in 72 participants, ginger improved runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, and quality of life. Its active compounds (gingerols, shogaols, zingerones) act as natural anti-inflammatory and antihistamine agents.

  • N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a mucolytic agent that directly breaks disulfide bonds in mucus glycoproteins, reducing viscosity and improving mucociliary clearance. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study confirmed NAC significantly improved nasal mucociliary clearance time (p=0.021) versus placebo. NAC also reduces biofilm formation and inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines, making it relevant to infection-related and chronic post-nasal drip.

  • Proteína de ResCientífico

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) has been used traditionally and studied clinically for allergic rhinitis, a primary cause of post-nasal drip. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (PMC5963652) in 40 perennial allergic rhinitis patients showed significant improvement in SNOT-22 symptom scores and reduced nasal eosinophil counts with nettle root extract. Its mechanisms include histamine antagonism and inhibition of COX-1/COX-2 enzymes.

  • quercetinCientífico

Quercetin, a flavonoid found in many plants, inhibits mast cell degranulation and histamine release, directly reducing allergic rhinitis symptoms including rhinorrhea and post-nasal drip. A 2022 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showed quercetin-containing supplements significantly improved nasal discharge scores and allergy quality-of-life measures versus placebo. A 2025 systematic review (PRISMA, 18 studies) confirmed preclinical and emerging clinical evidence for its role in allergic rhinitis.

  • carrapichinhoCientífico

Vitamin D plays an immune-modulating role in upper respiratory mucosal defense and has been studied clinically as adjunctive treatment for chronic sinusitis and rhinitis-associated post-nasal drip. A 2023 RCT (PMC10142908, n=60) found a supplement containing vitamin D and Boswellia significantly reduced rhinorrhea in chronic sinusitis versus nasal steroid alone. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased severity of allergic rhinitis and sinusitis.

  • Zinc supports immune defense in the upper respiratory mucosa and has been used in clinical nutraceutical formulations that significantly reduced nasal symptoms including rhinorrhea in upper respiratory tract infections. A single-blinded clinical trial (Healthcare, 2022) found a supplement containing Boswellia, bromelain, zinc, and magnesium improved nasal findings and reduced infection duration. Zinc also inhibits rhinoviral replication, a common cause of post-nasal drip.

  • goldenrodTradicional

Goldenrod's traditional classification as an anticatarrhal herb encompasses post-nasal drip as a manifestation of upper respiratory catarrh. European and North American herbal traditions use it to reduce mucosal hypersecretion from the nasal passages. No clinical studies specifically addressing post-nasal drip have been conducted.

  • Horseradish has been traditionally used to stimulate and clear sinus congestion, including conditions associated with post-nasal drip. The pungent AITC vapours cause immediate stimulation of nasal secretion and lacrimation. This mucolytic and decongestant effect is the mechanistic basis, though no clinical trials specifically address post-nasal drip.

  • Hyssop is referenced in herbal tradition for nasopharyngeal catarrh and excess mucus, conditions that underlie post-nasal drip. Its antispasmodic and expectorant actions on mucous membranes are part of its classical respiratory use.

  • Menthol's cooling effect on nasal passages has historically been used to relieve post-nasal drip and associated discomfort. Clinical evidence is indirect, derived from studies showing menthol improves nasal airflow sensation during congestion and cold symptoms, but specific post-nasal drip trials are absent.

  • mulleinTradicional

Mullein is traditionally used for catarrhal conditions involving excess or sticky mucous membrane secretions draining down the throat. Its expectorant and decongestant actions are well-documented in traditional herbalism. No clinical trials addressing post-nasal drip specifically have been conducted.

  • trompeta negraTradicional

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) and its active compound menthol are widely used traditionally to relieve the sensation of nasal congestion and post-nasal drip. Menthol activates TRPM8 cold receptors in the nasal passages, creating a cooling sensation of improved airflow. While it does not physically reduce mucus, it is well-established as a symptomatic comfort remedy in herbalism, Ayurveda, and traditional European medicine for nasal congestion and rhinitis.

  • platycodon rootTradicional

Platycodon root is classified in TCM as a phlegm-transforming and mucus-expelling herb and has been used to address excess upper respiratory mucus production. Platycodin D has been shown in vitro to inhibit IL-13-induced inflammatory cytokine and mucus expression in nasal epithelial cells. No clinical trial specifically targeting post-nasal drip has been conducted.
