Sinopsis

La conjuntivitis es la inflamación o infección de la conjuntiva, el tejido delgado y transparente que recubre el interior del párpado y cubre la parte blanca del globo ocular. Esta condición provoca enrojecimiento, picazón, hinchazón, secreción y a veces una sensación arenosa en los ojos. Puede afectar uno o ambos ojos y es altamente contagiosa cuando es causada por un virus o bacteria.

Existen varias formas de conjuntivitis según la causa — viral, bacteriana, alérgica o relacionada con irritantes. Si bien la conjuntivitis viral es el tipo más común (especialmente en adultos), la conjuntivitis bacteriana se observa con frecuencia en niños.
