Urinary System
Synopsis of Urinary System
The urinary system is responsible for the elimination of waste products, regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance, acid-base balance, and blood pressure control. It includes four primary components:
-
Kidneys: Filter blood to remove waste, excess water, and electrolytes; also regulate hormone production (e.g., erythropoietin and renin).
-
Ureters: Transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
-
Bladder: Stores urine until excretion.
-
Urethra: The tube through which urine is expelled from the body.
The kidneys filter approximately 50 gallons of blood daily, producing about 1–2 quarts of urine. They maintain homeostasis by adjusting the volume and composition of bodily fluids.
Urinary system disorders can affect any part of the tract and range from infections to chronic disease. Common issues include:
-
Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Bacterial infections, especially common in women, affecting the bladder (cystitis), urethra (urethritis), or kidneys (pyelonephritis).
-
Kidney stones: Hard mineral deposits that form in the kidneys and may obstruct urine flow.
-
Chronic kidney disease (CKD): Gradual loss of kidney function due to diabetes, hypertension, or other factors.
-
Incontinence: Loss of bladder control, often due to muscle or nerve dysfunction.
-
Interstitial cystitis: Chronic bladder inflammation without infection.
-
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): In men, an enlarged prostate can obstruct urine flow.
Symptoms of urinary system dysfunction may include frequent or painful urination, blood in urine, swelling, fatigue, and back pain.
Natural remedies to support Urinary System
Water and herbal teas: Promote flushing of toxins and reduce risk of infections and stones.
Cranberry extract and D-mannose: Prevent bacteria from adhering to urinary tract walls.
Marshmallow root and slippery elm: Soothe mucosal tissues of the bladder and urethra.
Parsley and dandelion: Mild diuretics that promote urine flow.
Magnesium and potassium: Support kidney filtration and prevent stone formation.
Probiotics: Help prevent recurrent UTIs by balancing vaginal and gut flora.
