Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, to support respiratory health and the lungs. Historically, turmeric has been used to help with symptoms of coughs, colds, asthma, and bronchitis due to its supposed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The primary active compound in turmeric, curcumin, is believed in traditional practices to help reduce inflammation in the airways and support overall lung function. However, while modern research has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of curcumin in general, direct scientific evidence for turmeric’s effectiveness specifically for lung health in humans is limited. Most studies are preclinical (cell or animal models), with only a few small clinical trials suggesting possible benefits for conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The use of turmeric for lung support remains primarily rooted in tradition, and the scientific community generally agrees that more robust human studies are needed to confirm these effects. Therefore, while turmeric is traditionally used to support lung health, the current scientific evidence is still emerging and not yet robust.
