Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been used traditionally in various cultures for its medicinal properties, including oral health benefits. However, in recent years, its potential role in supporting or treating gingivitis has gained some scientific attention. Gingivitis is a common inflammatory condition of the gums, usually caused by bacterial biofilms (plaque). Studies indicate that ginger contains bioactive compounds such as gingerol, shogaol, and paradol, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.
Several in vitro and small-scale clinical studies suggest that ginger extracts can inhibit the growth of oral pathogens associated with gingivitis, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans. Additionally, ginger's anti-inflammatory effects may help reduce gingival inflammation. For example, a 2018 randomized clinical trial found that a herbal mouthwash containing ginger extract led to significant improvements in gingival index and plaque control compared to placebo. Animal models also suggest favorable effects on gum inflammation.
Despite this, the clinical evidence remains limited. Studies often have small sample sizes, short durations, and variable formulations. More robust, large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. In summary, while preliminary scientific evidence supports ginger's adjunctive use for gingivitis, it is not yet strong enough to recommend as a primary therapy. Ginger may be considered as a supplementary approach alongside conventional oral hygiene measures.
