Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has a long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for supporting liver and gallbladder health. The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, is believed to stimulate bile production in the liver and promote its excretion from the gallbladder, which, in theory, may help with "sluggish" gallbladder function. Turmeric has traditionally been used to alleviate symptoms of dyspepsia, bloating, and fat digestion issues that are sometimes associated with gallbladder dysfunction.

However, while animal and in vitro studies suggest that curcumin can increase bile flow and has anti-inflammatory effects, robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest turmeric may help relieve symptoms after gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy), such as indigestion or mild gastrointestinal discomfort, by aiding bile flow. Yet, these studies are few, often not well-controlled, and do not conclusively demonstrate effectiveness for gallbladder-specific conditions.

Overall, the use of turmeric for gallbladder support is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation. Its safety profile is generally good, but those with gallstones or bile duct obstruction should use caution, as turmeric can promote gallbladder contraction. As always, individuals should consult a healthcare provider before using turmeric for this purpose.
