Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the health condition: Colds (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia, for the prevention and management of colds and related symptoms. In Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, ginger is considered a warming remedy that helps to expel “cold” from the body, promote sweating, and alleviate symptoms such as congestion, sore throat, and cough. The traditional rationale is based on ginger’s pungency and its perceived effect on circulation and immune response.
Modern scientific studies have investigated ginger’s pharmacological properties, finding that it contains bioactive compounds like gingerol and shogaol that have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. Some laboratory studies suggest ginger can inhibit certain viruses and bacteria, and modulate immune function. However, high-quality clinical trials directly evaluating ginger’s effectiveness for cold prevention in humans are limited. Most studies focus on symptom relief (such as nausea or sore throat) rather than outright prevention of colds. Consequently, while there is plausible biological rationale and extensive traditional use, robust scientific validation for ginger’s role specifically in cold prevention is lacking. Thus, its use is best described as supported by tradition with moderate, but not strong, evidence.
