Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for a variety of oral and digestive complaints. Its use for canker sores (aphthous ulcers) is primarily traditional rather than scientific. Folk remedies often recommend applying ginger juice or chewed ginger to mouth ulcers, based on ginger's reputed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, as well as its ability to promote healing and reduce pain. However, scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of ginger for canker sores are lacking. The main bioactive compounds in ginger, such as gingerols and shogaols, are known to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in vitro and in animal studies, but clinical trials specific to oral ulcers are minimal or nonexistent. Most recommendations for using ginger in this context are extrapolated from its general anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, while there is a reasonable traditional basis for ginger’s use in managing canker sores, direct scientific validation is currently insufficient, and evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited to anecdotal reports and general pharmacological properties.
