Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the health condition: Nausea and Vomiting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is widely recognized both traditionally and scientifically for its anti-nausea properties. Historically, ginger has been used for centuries in various cultures, including traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, to alleviate digestive discomfort, nausea, and vomiting. However, its role in modern medicine is supported by a substantial body of scientific research, particularly for nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy (morning sickness), motion sickness, and postoperative nausea.
Multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have evaluated ginger's effectiveness for these conditions. For example, a 2014 Cochrane review concluded that ginger is more effective than placebo for reducing nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, with few adverse effects reported. Similarly, studies suggest ginger may be beneficial in reducing postoperative nausea and vomiting, as well as nausea related to chemotherapy, although the evidence for chemotherapy-induced nausea is less robust. The active constituents of ginger, such as gingerols and shogaols, are believed to exert antiemetic effects by antagonizing serotonin receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system.
While ginger is considered safe for most people when used in moderate amounts, some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal side effects. Overall, the scientific evidence supporting ginger's use for nausea and vomiting is strong, especially for pregnancy-related and postoperative cases, justifying its inclusion as a supportive therapy.
