Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the health condition: Afterbirth Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia, for supporting women’s health during the postpartum period. In traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and various Southeast Asian practices, ginger is commonly administered to women after childbirth to "warm the body," promote uterine contractions, and aid recovery. The rationale is often based on the belief that ginger’s warming properties help dispel "coldness" thought to enter the body after delivery and thereby alleviate afterbirth pains (also known as postpartum uterine contractions or "afterpains"), which are caused by the uterus returning to its pre-pregnancy size. From a scientific perspective, ginger contains bioactive compounds like gingerols and shogaols that exhibit anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. While these actions could theoretically help with pain, direct scientific evidence specifically evaluating ginger for afterbirth pain is limited. Most available studies focus on ginger’s efficacy for dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps) or general pain relief, not specifically afterbirth pain. A few small studies and anecdotal reports from traditional practices suggest possible benefits, but rigorous clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, while ginger’s use for afterbirth pain is well-rooted in tradition and there is some plausibility based on its general pain-relieving effects, the direct scientific evidence supporting this specific use is weak and more research is needed.
