Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for supporting respiratory health, including soothing coughs and relieving symptoms of bronchitis. Modern scientific research has begun to validate some of these traditional uses, though the evidence is still preliminary and not uniformly robust.

Licorice root contains several bioactive compounds, such as glycyrrhizin and liquiritin, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and antiviral properties in laboratory and animal studies. These effects may contribute to easing inflammation in the respiratory tract, thinning mucus, and reducing coughing. For example, a review published in the journal Phytotherapy Research (2017) highlights licorice's potential in treating sore throats, coughs, and upper respiratory tract infections, citing both laboratory and limited clinical studies.

Some small clinical trials have assessed the use of licorice-based gargles and syrups in reducing sore throat symptoms following surgery or during respiratory infections, with generally positive results. However, large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials are lacking.

Overall, licorice root’s use for respiratory support is justified by both traditional use and a moderate, though not definitive, level of scientific evidence. Caution is warranted due to potential side effects, especially with prolonged use or high doses, such as elevated blood pressure and electrolyte imbalances.
