Turmeric is used in pet supplements primarily to support joint health, reduce inflammation, and provide antioxidant benefits. The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, has been widely studied for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in humans and, to a lesser extent, in animals. Scientific studies in dogs and other animals suggest that curcumin can help manage osteoarthritis and other inflammatory conditions by modulating inflammatory pathways and reducing oxidative stress. For example, a 2017 study published in the journal "Research in Veterinary Science" demonstrated that dogs with osteoarthritis showed improvement in clinical symptoms after supplementation with a curcumin-phospholipid complex compared to placebo. However, the number of high-quality, large-scale clinical trials in pets remains limited, and issues such as bioavailability (the body's ability to absorb and use curcumin) are significant concerns that may limit efficacy unless specialized formulations are used.

Traditional use of turmeric in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for both humans and animals also informs its inclusion in pet supplements, but the modern justification increasingly relies on emerging scientific data. Overall, while there is some scientific validation, the strength of evidence is moderate and primarily based on small or preliminary studies. More research is needed to fully establish its efficacy and optimal dosing in pets.
