In the context of mononucleosis (commonly caused by the Epstein-Barr virus), ginger is sometimes recommended in traditional or complementary health circles to help manage symptoms such as sore throat, fatigue, and inflammation. However, there is no direct scientific evidence supporting ginger as a treatment or cure for mononucleosis itself. The use of ginger in this context is primarily based on its general ability to soothe sore throats and reduce inflammation, as well as its traditional use for supporting the immune system during viral illnesses.
Scientific studies confirm that ginger contains compounds such as gingerol and shogaol with anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects, and it has demonstrated mild antiviral activity in laboratory settings.
