Turmeric (Curcuma longa), and specifically its active compound curcumin, is increasingly studied for its potential benefits in managing Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Metabolic Syndrome is characterized by a cluster of conditions, including insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and central obesity. Scientific evidence suggests that curcumin may exert beneficial effects through its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-modulating properties.

Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated curcumin supplementation in individuals with MetS or related risk factors. These studies indicate that curcumin may improve lipid profiles (reducing LDL and triglycerides, increasing HDL), lower fasting blood glucose, and decrease inflammatory markers such as CRP and TNF-α. For example, a 2016 meta-analysis in Phytotherapy Research found that curcumin supplementation significantly reduced serum triglycerides and improved overall metabolic profiles in patients with MetS and related disorders.

However, the quality of evidence varies, with some studies limited by small sample sizes, short durations, or variability in curcumin formulations and dosages. While preclinical studies provide strong mechanistic support, clinical trials are sometimes inconsistent or modest in their effects. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for turmeric's use in supporting metabolic health, more large-scale, long-term studies are needed to establish definitive efficacy and optimal dosing strategies.
