Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these traditions, turmeric is valued for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and purported antimicrobial properties. While there is no robust historical documentation of turmeric being a primary treatment for malaria, it has occasionally been included in traditional remedies aimed at managing fever and symptoms associated with infectious diseases, including malaria. The rationale for its use historically was to alleviate symptoms like fever, pain, and inflammation, rather than to eradicate the malaria parasite itself.

From a scientific standpoint, modern research has investigated curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric, for its potential antimalarial effects. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that curcumin may have inhibitory effects on the growth of Plasmodium species, the parasites responsible for malaria. However, these effects are modest and have not translated into effective or recommended therapies for human malaria. Clinical trials in humans are lacking, and current medical guidelines do not support turmeric or curcumin as a treatment or preventive measure for malaria. Therefore, while there is some traditional use and preliminary scientific interest, the overall evidence supporting turmeric for malaria is weak and not sufficient for clinical application.
