Ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng, has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine to support lung health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), ginseng is believed to "tonify Qi," especially the "Lung Qi," which is thought to relate to respiratory strength, vitality, and immune defense. Historical texts describe its use in managing conditions like chronic cough, shortness of breath, and general weakness. The root has been incorporated into formulas intended to strengthen the lungs and improve recovery from respiratory illnesses.

On the scientific side, there is some emerging research suggesting that ginseng may have immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects, which could potentially benefit respiratory function. Some small studies and animal research indicate that ginseng extracts might reduce airway inflammation and enhance resistance to certain respiratory infections. However, high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically targeting lung health outcomes (such as asthma, COPD, or other chronic lung diseases) are limited, and results are inconclusive.

Therefore, the primary justification for using ginseng to support the lungs is rooted in tradition rather than robust scientific evidence. While early research is promising, it is not yet sufficient to conclusively validate the historical use. Thus, ginseng’s reputation for supporting lung health remains mostly traditional, with moderate traditional evidence and limited scientific validation.
