Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for treating various skin ailments, including wounds and lesions. However, there is also a growing body of scientific evidence that supports its use for managing lesions, especially due to its main bioactive compound, curcumin. Curcumin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties in numerous in vitro and animal studies. These properties are relevant to the healing of lesions, as inflammation and microbial infection are common complications that can delay wound healing. Some small clinical studies have shown that topical application of turmeric or curcumin-containing formulations can promote wound healing, reduce inflammation, and accelerate tissue repair in skin lesions and ulcers. For example, a few randomized controlled trials have reported improved healing rates in patients with various types of wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers and oral lesions, when turmeric-based preparations were used.

Despite these promising findings, the overall clinical evidence is still limited and often hampered by small sample sizes, varying formulations, and methodological differences. More rigorous, large-scale human trials are needed to establish standardized dosing, safety, and efficacy. Nonetheless, the current scientific validation—combined with its traditional use—supports the use of turmeric as an adjunct in managing certain types of lesions, especially when standard treatments are inadequate or as complementary therapy.
