Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, to manage symptoms of respiratory illnesses, including influenza. Traditionally, ginger is believed to "warm" the body and help expel pathogens, making it a popular remedy for colds and flu. Common preparations include ginger tea, decoctions, or powders, often combined with honey and lemon to alleviate symptoms like sore throat, cough, and congestion.

From a scientific perspective, ginger contains bioactive compounds such as gingerol, shogaol, and paradol, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild antimicrobial properties in vitro and in animal studies. Some laboratory studies suggest ginger extracts may inhibit the attachment and internalization of influenza viruses in cell cultures. However, robust clinical trials in humans for influenza are lacking, and current evidence does not confirm ginger as an effective treatment for the flu itself.

In summary, while ginger’s use in influenza is strongly rooted in traditional medicine and supported by plausible mechanisms in preclinical research, high-quality human studies are needed to validate its efficacy for treating or preventing influenza. Its main role remains as a supportive remedy to relieve symptoms rather than as a direct antiviral treatment.
