Historically, licorice root has been used as an anti-inflammatory, demulcent, and harmonizing herb in multi-herbal remedies, some of which are used to address headaches, particularly those associated with inflammation or digestive disturbances. In TCM, licorice is often combined with other herbs to “harmonize” formulas for headaches related to “wind-heat” or “heat” patterns, though it is rarely used as a standalone remedy specifically for headaches.
From a scientific perspective, direct evidence supporting licorice root as an effective treatment for headaches is lacking. Most modern research focuses on its effects for conditions like gastric ulcers, cough, or inflammation.
