Turmeric has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its primary active compound, curcumin, is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In the context of glaucoma, traditional uses are based mainly on these general properties, as oxidative stress and inflammation are implicated in the progression of glaucoma and other eye diseases. However, there is limited direct evidence within traditional medicine texts that specifically recommend turmeric for the treatment or support of glaucoma, as most references focus on its general benefits for eye health and inflammation.

From a scientific perspective, preclinical studies have explored the neuroprotective effects of curcumin in models of ocular diseases, including glaucoma. Curcumin has been shown to reduce oxidative damage and protect retinal ganglion cells in animal models. However, these studies are preliminary, and clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Challenges such as poor bioavailability of curcumin further limit its applicability. At this time, turmeric’s use for glaucoma is supported more by traditional rationale and basic science than robust clinical data. Therefore, while turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects may theoretically benefit glaucoma, its use for this specific condition is not strongly validated by scientific research, and it should not replace conventional glaucoma treatments.
