Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems as a remedy for a variety of wounds and infections, including potentially gangrenous tissue. The rationale for its use comes from its well-known anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. In folk medicine, turmeric paste is sometimes applied topically to infected wounds to limit the spread of infection and promote healing. However, there is little to no direct historical or textual evidence that turmeric was specifically used for the clinical condition of gangrene as defined in modern medicine. Rather, its use was generally applied to infected or necrotic wounds, which may have included cases that would now be classified as gangrene.

From a scientific perspective, research supports turmeric's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, primarily due to its active component, curcumin. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that curcumin can inhibit various pathogens and reduce inflammation. However, there are no clinical trials or robust scientific evidence supporting the use of turmeric as a sole or primary treatment for gangrene in humans. Gangrene is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition requiring urgent surgical and medical intervention, and traditional remedies like turmeric should not replace standard care. Thus, turmeric's use in gangrene is justified primarily by tradition, with only indirect scientific support for its general wound-healing and antimicrobial effects.
