In these traditions, turmeric is believed to possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, which are thought to be beneficial for conditions like conjunctivitis, styes, and general eye irritation. Turmeric paste or decoctions are sometimes applied externally around the eyes or used as eyewashes in folk remedies, though such practices are not widely recommended today due to the risk of irritation or infection.

From a scientific perspective, curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been shown in laboratory and animal studies to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that could theoretically benefit eye health. Some preliminary research suggests curcumin may help in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, or age-related macular degeneration by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. However, robust clinical trials in humans are limited, and issues with curcumin’s bioavailability pose challenges for its effective use in eye conditions.
