Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been used historically in various traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, to support digestive health and treat dyspepsia (indigestion). Modern scientific research has begun to validate some of these uses. Specifically, deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is the form most commonly studied for gastrointestinal complaints, including functional dyspepsia.
Clinical trials and observational studies suggest that DGL may help alleviate symptoms of dyspepsia, such as bloating, discomfort, and epigastric pain. The proposed mechanisms include increased production of mucus in the stomach lining, which helps protect against acid and irritants, and potential anti-inflammatory effects. Some randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that DGL can improve symptoms of functional dyspepsia when compared to placebo, though the quality and size of the studies are moderate and more research is needed for definitive conclusions.
While the traditional use of licorice root for digestive issues provides historical context, the current scientific evidence is sufficient to justify its use as a supportive treatment for dyspepsia, but it is not as robust as for some other treatments. Safety should also be considered: whole licorice root (containing glycyrrhizin) can cause side effects like hypertension and hypokalemia if used excessively, so DGL is preferred for long-term or frequent use. Overall, licorice root (especially as DGL) is a scientifically supported option for dyspepsia, but with moderate-quality evidence (3/5) and best used as adjunctive therapy.
