For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) has a long history of traditional use as a remedy for coughs and other respiratory ailments. The leaves and flowers of the plant have been used in folk medicine, particularly in Europe and North America, for centuries. Traditional herbalists have prepared mullein as teas, syrups, or tinctures to soothe irritated mucous membranes, reduce coughing, and promote expectoration (clearing of mucus from the airways). Mullein is believed to have demulcent (soothing) and mild expectorant properties, which may help relieve the discomfort associated with a cough.
Scientific evidence supporting mullein’s effectiveness for cough is limited, but some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild antimicrobial effects in extracts of the plant. These properties could theoretically contribute to its traditional use for respiratory symptoms. However, there are few well-designed clinical trials evaluating mullein specifically for cough in humans. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on historical use rather than robust modern research.
Overall, while there is a strong tradition of using mullein for coughs, scientific validation is limited, and more clinical research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this purpose. Nonetheless, mullein continues to be a popular ingredient in many herbal cough remedies.
