Slippery elm bark (Ulmus rubra) has a long history of traditional use in North American herbal medicine, particularly among Indigenous peoples, for soothing the digestive tract. The inner bark contains mucilage, a gelatinous substance that swells when mixed with water, forming a slick gel. This mucilage is believed to coat and soothe the lining of the stomach and intestines, which can help relieve irritation and promote regular bowel movements. Traditionally, slippery elm has been used to treat constipation by acting as a gentle bulk-forming laxative. The increase in bulk and moisture in the stool can stimulate peristalsis, facilitating easier passage of stool. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating slippery elm’s effectiveness for treating constipation in adults are limited. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on its traditional use rather than robust clinical trials. Some small studies and case reports suggest it may help with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including constipation, but the data are not strong or conclusive. Overall, while slippery elm is widely used in traditional medicine for constipation, its efficacy has not been established by modern scientific research, and its use for this purpose should be considered primarily traditional.
