Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and folk remedies in Europe and the Middle East, for treating respiratory ailments including colds, coughs, and sore throats. In TCM, licorice root is often included in herbal formulas to "harmonize" the effects of other herbs and to soothe irritated mucous membranes. It is believed to have demulcent (soothing), anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties, which may help ease symptoms associated with colds, such as sore throat and cough.
