Turmeric (Curcuma longa), specifically its active compound curcumin, has been studied for its potential benefits in liver health, including cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is characterized by chronic inflammation and fibrosis of the liver, usually due to long-standing liver injury. Traditionally, turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for various liver ailments, but scientific investigation into its effects on cirrhosis is relatively recent.

Preclinical studies (mainly in animal models) suggest that curcumin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antifibrotic properties. These actions may theoretically limit liver damage, reduce oxidative stress, and inhibit the activation of hepatic stellate cells, which are central to the development of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Some rodent studies have shown that curcumin supplementation can reduce markers of liver injury and fibrosis.

However, high-quality human clinical trials specifically investigating turmeric or curcumin for cirrhosis are limited. Most available evidence comes from small pilot studies or indirect evidence from studies on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or hepatitis. While results are generally promising regarding liver enzyme improvement and reduced inflammation, there is not enough robust clinical data to recommend turmeric as a primary or adjunct therapy for cirrhosis.

In summary, the use of turmeric for cirrhosis is supported by preclinical evidence and tradition but lacks strong clinical validation. Patients should consult healthcare professionals before using turmeric supplements, especially due to potential interactions with medications or underlying conditions.
