Evidence supporting the use of: Beet
For the body system: Circulatory System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Beet (Beta vulgaris), particularly in the form of beetroot juice, has garnered scientific attention for its potential to support the circulatory system. The primary mechanism lies in its high content of dietary nitrates, which the body converts into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a well-known vasodilator, meaning it relaxes the inner muscles of the blood vessels, causing them to widen and improve blood flow. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that consumption of beetroot juice can lead to significant reductions in blood pressure, especially in individuals with hypertension. For example, a 2015 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the journal Hypertension found that beetroot juice supplementation led to a modest but statistically significant reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
In addition to blood pressure effects, there is evidence that beets may enhance exercise performance by improving oxygen delivery and utilization, which is also tied to improved circulation. However, while the evidence for blood pressure and vascular benefits is fairly robust, more research is needed to determine long-term cardiovascular outcome benefits. Overall, the use of beet to support the circulatory system is backed by scientific research, particularly in the context of blood pressure regulation and vascular health, warranting a high (but not maximal) evidence rating.
