Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for supporting respiratory health and alleviating symptoms associated with the bronchial system, such as cough, sore throat, and congestion. The primary rationale for its use is based on its warming properties and its ability to help clear mucus, as described in these traditional systems. While ginger is known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and some studies suggest it may help with symptoms of asthma or respiratory infections due to inhibition of airway inflammation, clinical evidence specific to ginger’s effectiveness for bronchial support remains limited and mostly preclinical or anecdotal. A few small studies and animal models have indicated that ginger constituents might help relax airway smooth muscle and reduce inflammation, but robust, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, its use for bronchial support is primarily justified by traditional use, with some preliminary scientific rationale but insufficient evidence for strong clinical recommendations.
