Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Turmeric (Curcuma longa), particularly its active constituent curcumin, has been studied for its potential effects on cardiovascular health, including arteriosclerosis (the thickening and hardening of arterial walls). Scientific interest in turmeric for this condition is based on its well-documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are recognized contributors to the development and progression of arteriosclerosis.

Experimental studies in animals and some small-scale human trials suggest that curcumin may help reduce factors associated with arteriosclerosis. For example, curcumin has been shown to inhibit the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, reduce endothelial dysfunction, and lower markers of systemic inflammation such as C-reactive protein (CRP). Some research also indicates that turmeric extracts may improve lipid profiles by lowering total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

However, the clinical evidence remains limited. Most human studies are preliminary, with small sample sizes and varying dosages and formulations. There is not yet strong, large-scale clinical trial data to definitively support turmeric as a treatment for arteriosclerosis, though its safety profile and mechanistic plausibility are promising. As a result, while there is scientific rationale and early evidence supporting turmeric’s use for arteriosclerosis, the strength of evidence is moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
