Evidence supporting the use of: Beet
For the body system: Arteries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Beet (Beta vulgaris), particularly in the form of beetroot juice, is supported by scientific evidence for its positive effects on the arterial (cardiovascular) system. The primary active compounds are dietary nitrates, which the body converts into nitric oxide—a molecule that relaxes and dilates blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that beetroot juice supplementation can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure in both healthy and hypertensive individuals. A 2013 meta-analysis published in Hypertension found that dietary nitrate from beetroot significantly reduced blood pressure. Other studies suggest that beet supplementation improves endothelial function and arterial stiffness, both important markers of arterial health. While most research focuses on short-term effects, the consistency of findings across different populations and dosages lends credibility to beet’s role in supporting arterial health. However, more long-term studies are needed to confirm sustained benefits and to assess effects on major cardiovascular outcomes. Overall, the scientific validation for beet's use in supporting the arteries is strong, especially related to its nitrate content and resulting vascular effects.
