Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is widely known for its use in traditional medicine, but there is also a growing body of scientific evidence suggesting benefits for small intestine health. The key active compound in turmeric is curcumin, which exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Several preclinical studies have indicated that curcumin may help modulate intestinal inflammation, protect intestinal barrier function, and support gut microbiota balance. For example, animal studies have shown that turmeric and curcumin can reduce inflammatory markers and preserve the integrity of the intestinal lining in models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which primarily affects the small and large intestines.

Clinical research in humans is more limited but promising. Some small-scale studies in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and IBD report symptomatic improvement with curcumin supplementation, although these studies often include both small and large intestine involvement and have methodological limitations. There is not yet robust, large-scale clinical evidence specifically targeting the small intestine in otherwise healthy individuals, but the mechanisms—such as modulation of cytokines and maintenance of epithelial tight junctions—are relevant to small intestine health. Overall, the use of turmeric for supporting the small intestine is justified by both traditional use and emerging scientific data, though the evidence is moderate (rated 3/5) and more clinical trials are needed.
