Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and Unani. In these systems, licorice root has been used for a wide range of ailments, including fever. Historically, it has been included in herbal formulas intended to "clear heat" or address symptoms associated with fevers, such as sore throat and cough. The traditional rationale centers on licorice root's perceived abilities to harmonize the effects of other herbs and to soothe inflammation and irritation caused by infections that may be accompanied by fever.
However, the scientific evidence supporting the direct use of licorice root for reducing or treating fever is very limited. Most modern research on licorice root focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and gastroprotective properties, rather than its antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects. Animal and in vitro studies suggest certain compounds in licorice, such as glycyrrhizin, exhibit immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory actions, but these findings have not been robustly translated into clinical evidence for fever management in humans. Thus, while licorice root is traditionally used for fever in some cultures, scientific validation for this specific use is weak, and modern clinical guidelines do not recommend it for this purpose.
