Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the health condition: Dizziness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is widely used in both traditional and modern contexts for managing dizziness, especially that associated with motion sickness and vertigo. Scientifically, several clinical studies suggest that ginger can be effective in reducing the severity and frequency of dizziness and vertigo symptoms. The primary active components in ginger, such as gingerols and shogaols, are thought to exert antiemetic effects by antagonizing serotonin receptors in the gastrointestinal system and possibly within the central nervous system. This mechanism may help inhibit the pathways that trigger nausea and dizziness. Notably, a 2014 systematic review published in the journal Phytotherapy Research found that ginger was effective in reducing symptoms of motion sickness, which often includes dizziness, in several randomized controlled trials. However, the quality and size of these studies varied, and some results were mixed.
Traditionally, ginger has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to treat various forms of nausea and dizziness. While the evidence is stronger for its anti-nausea effects, the overlap between nausea and dizziness in motion sickness and vestibular disorders has led to its use for both symptoms. Overall, while ginger is not a cure-all and may not work for everyone, its use for dizziness, particularly that related to motion sickness, has moderate scientific backing. Further large-scale and high-quality trials are needed to better define its efficacy and optimal dosing for dizziness specifically.
