Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. Within these traditions, licorice root is believed to harmonize the effects of other herbs and is sometimes used in formulas aimed at supporting women’s reproductive health. In TCM, it is thought to tonify the spleen and augment qi, and is sometimes included in herbal blends for menstrual discomfort or to support overall uterine health. However, the use of licorice root specifically for direct uterine support is more rooted in tradition than in rigorous scientific research.

Scientific studies on licorice root have focused primarily on its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant properties, as well as its effects on cortisol metabolism due to the compound glycyrrhizin. There is limited research examining its direct effects on the uterus or uterine health. Some animal and cell studies suggest phytoestrogenic effects, but human data are lacking. Moreover, excessive licorice consumption is associated with adverse effects, including hypertension and hypokalemia, which may outweigh any potential benefits for uterine support. Thus, while licorice root is used traditionally for general reproductive system support, there is minimal scientific validation for its use specifically to support the uterus.
