Evidence supporting the use of: Orange
For the body system: Spleen
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Oranges have a strong traditional association with supporting the Spleen in the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, the "Spleen" is not the anatomical organ as understood in Western medicine, but rather a functional system responsible for transforming food into Qi (energy) and Blood. Oranges, especially their dried peel (commonly called "Chen Pi"), are considered beneficial for regulating Qi, reducing dampness, and harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach. These properties have been described in Chinese herbal texts for centuries. However, the application of oranges or orange peel for direct Spleen support is largely based on these traditional frameworks rather than modern biomedical research.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited evidence connecting orange consumption specifically to Spleen health as understood in Western medicine (i.e., immune function or blood filtration). Oranges are rich in vitamin C, flavonoids, and fiber, which support general immune and digestive health, but there are no robust clinical studies showing a unique benefit to the Spleen specifically. Thus, while oranges are traditionally used for Spleen support in TCM, scientific support for this specific function is minimal.
