Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these systems, licorice root is considered an adaptogen, believed to help the body manage stress and support endocrine health, including the pituitary gland. The pituitary is often referred to as the "master gland" because it regulates various hormonal functions in the body. Traditional healers have used licorice root to promote balance in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is central to stress response and hormonal regulation.

However, the scientific evidence specifically linking licorice root to direct support or modulation of pituitary function is weak. Most research focuses on licorice’s influence on cortisol metabolism and its effects on the adrenal glands due to its glycyrrhizin content, which can inhibit the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. This interaction can indirectly impact the HPA axis, but direct evidence for pituitary-specific benefits is lacking. Thus, its use to support the pituitary is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation.
