Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for digestive complaints, including symptoms related to overacidity such as heartburn, gastritis, and peptic ulcers. Modern scientific research provides some validation for these uses, particularly for deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), a form that has had glycyrrhizin (which can cause side effects) removed. DGL has been studied for its ability to soothe and protect the mucous membranes of the stomach and esophagus, enhance mucus production, and promote healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers. Several clinical studies and reviews suggest that DGL may be effective in reducing symptoms of dyspepsia and improving healing rates for ulcers associated with gastric acidity, with some evidence showing comparable efficacy to conventional antacids or therapies in mild cases.

The mechanism behind licorice root’s effectiveness is attributed to its anti-inflammatory and mucoprotective properties, which help buffer the stomach lining against acid damage rather than neutralizing acid directly. However, the evidence base is not as robust or extensive as for standard pharmaceutical treatments, and most studies are relatively small or of moderate quality. Additionally, glycyrrhizin-containing licorice should be used cautiously to avoid side effects, including hypertension and electrolyte imbalances. Overall, licorice root, particularly in DGL form, is supported by both traditional use and moderate scientific evidence for supporting symptoms related to overacidity.
