Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for soothing irritated mucous membranes, particularly those of the respiratory and digestive tracts. The primary active compound, glycyrrhizin, exhibits anti-inflammatory, demulcent (soothing), and immunomodulatory effects. Scientific studies have supported these traditional uses: research shows that licorice root extracts can increase mucus production and promote the healing of mucosal tissue, especially in the stomach and throat. For example, deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is used in clinical settings to treat peptic ulcers and gastritis by enhancing the protective mucus layer and reducing inflammation.

Additionally, licorice root's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties may help reduce irritation and infection in mucous membranes. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that licorice extracts can inhibit the growth of pathogens that affect mucosal surfaces. However, most human studies focus on the digestive tract, with less direct evidence for other mucus membranes (such as nasal or oral tissues). Still, the overall body of evidence supports licorice root's role in supporting and protecting mucous membranes, though caution is warranted due to potential side effects from excessive or prolonged use, such as hypertension and hypokalemia.
