Chickweed (Stellaria media) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in European and North American folk remedies. It has been employed as a soothing herb for respiratory complaints such as coughs, bronchitis, and chest congestion. Herbalists have valued chickweed for its purported demulcent (soothing) and expectorant properties, which are thought to help moisten and clear mucus from the respiratory tract. However, most of the evidence for chickweed’s use to support lung health comes from anecdotal reports, historical texts, and traditional herbal compendia rather than modern scientific studies.

To date, there is little to no robust clinical research substantiating chickweed's effectiveness specifically for lung or respiratory support. The plant is known to contain saponins, flavonoids, and other phytochemicals, some of which may have mild anti-inflammatory or soothing effects, but clinical validation for respiratory indications is lacking. While chickweed remains a popular ingredient in traditional teas and syrups for coughs and colds, its use for the lungs should be understood as primarily traditional and not scientifically validated.
