Evidence supporting the use of: Phellodendron amurense
For the body system: Liver
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Phellodendron amurense, also known as Amur cork tree, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is commonly known as "Huang Bai." In TCM, it is believed to have "heat-clearing" and "damp-drying" properties, and it is often used in herbal formulas intended to support liver health, particularly in cases of what is described as "damp-heat" in the liver and gallbladder. The bark contains several bioactive compounds, most notably berberine, which has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in laboratory settings. However, while there is some laboratory and animal research on berberine's general effects, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically confirming the efficacy of Phellodendron amurense for liver health in humans. Most of its use for liver support is rooted in traditional practice rather than modern clinical research. Therefore, while its traditional role is well established, scientific validation for its liver-supporting effects is limited, and more rigorous clinical studies would be needed to provide a stronger evidence base.
