Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for treating various types of lesions, especially those involving mucous membranes, such as mouth ulcers (aphthous stomatitis) and peptic ulcers. Recent scientific research provides some support for these traditional uses. The active compound in licorice root, glycyrrhizin, as well as its deglycyrrhizinated form (DGL), have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and mucoprotective properties in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Clinical trials have shown that DGL licorice can improve healing rates and reduce pain in patients with recurrent aphthous ulcers and peptic ulcers when used as a topical application or oral supplement. The mechanisms proposed include stimulation of mucus production, inhibition of Helicobacter pylori (a bacterium implicated in gastric ulcers), and modulation of inflammatory pathways. However, while these results are promising, the quality and size of studies are variable, and more robust randomized controlled trials are needed. Overall, licorice root’s use for lesions is supported by a combination of traditional practice and emerging scientific evidence, particularly for oral and gastric lesions, but caution is advised due to potential side effects like hypertension with long-term or excessive use of whole licorice extracts.
