Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other herbal systems to support gastrointestinal health, including the large intestine (colon). In TCM, licorice root is believed to harmonize the effects of other herbs, reduce toxicity, and soothe the digestive tract. It is commonly included in formulas for digestive disturbances, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. The traditional rationale is that licorice can "moisten the intestines" and reduce inflammation or irritation.

Modern scientific evidence for licorice root’s specific support of large intestine health is limited. Some studies indicate that licorice and its active constituent glycyrrhizin have anti-inflammatory and mucosal-protective effects, which could theoretically benefit the colon, especially in cases of colitis or other inflammatory bowel conditions.
