Evidence supporting the use of: Cinnamon
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cinnamon has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, cinnamon is often considered a warming spice and is sometimes used to support general wellbeing, including digestive health and circulation. In some cultures, cinnamon tea or warm milk with cinnamon is used as a home remedy to promote relaxation and aid sleep, but its use for insomnia is not a primary or widely recognized historical application. The rationale is mostly anecdotal, based on the spice’s comforting aroma and mild relaxing effects, rather than on specific sedative properties. From a scientific perspective, there is very limited evidence supporting cinnamon’s effectiveness for treating insomnia. Studies examining cinnamon typically focus on its potential metabolic, anti-inflammatory, or antimicrobial properties, rather than its impact on sleep. Only a few small studies and animal experiments have explored the effects of cinnamon on sleep, and these are neither robust nor conclusive. Therefore, while cinnamon may play a role in traditional bedtime rituals due to its flavor and aroma, and may indirectly promote relaxation, there is little scientific validation for its use as a treatment for insomnia. Anyone considering cinnamon for sleep support should regard it as a traditional remedy rather than an evidence-based treatment.
