Evidence supporting the use of: Orange
For the health condition: Indigestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Oranges and their peels have a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic practices, for the management of digestive complaints such as indigestion and poor appetite. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dried orange peel (referred to as "Chen Pi") is commonly used as a remedy to regulate qi (energy), alleviate bloating, and support the digestive process. Similarly, in Ayurveda, orange peel and even the fruit itself are sometimes used to promote digestive fire and relieve symptoms like nausea or heaviness after meals.
The rationale for their use is based on the belief that orange peel contains essential oils and bitter compounds that may stimulate digestive secretions and peristalsis, thus supporting better digestion. While some preliminary laboratory studies suggest that citrus peels contain compounds (such as flavonoids and essential oils) with mild antispasmodic and carminative properties, rigorous clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional usage rather than well-controlled scientific studies. Therefore, while orange is commonly used for indigestion in traditional systems, and there is a plausible mechanism, the scientific support for its efficacy is currently modest.
In summary, the use of orange for indigestion is primarily rooted in tradition, supported by anecdotal evidence and historical usage, with limited scientific validation to date.
