Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, for supporting digestive health and relieving symptoms of indigestion. The root contains several bioactive compounds, such as glycyrrhizin and flavonoids, which are believed to contribute to its therapeutic effects.
Modern scientific research provides some support for the use of licorice root in the management of indigestion and related gastrointestinal complaints. Studies have shown that deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), a form of licorice with the glycyrrhizin component removed to reduce side effects, may help soothe the mucosal lining of the stomach and esophagus. Randomized controlled trials have found that DGL can be effective in reducing symptoms of dyspepsia (indigestion), such as bloating, heartburn, and discomfort. The proposed mechanisms include increased mucus production and enhanced mucosal defense, which may help protect against stomach acid and promote healing of the gastrointestinal lining.
Despite these findings, the overall quality of evidence is moderate, and more high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish optimal dosing. It is also important to note that whole licorice root can cause significant side effects, such as hypertension and electrolyte imbalance, especially with prolonged use, so DGL preparations are generally preferred for digestive support.
