Zinc has been studied for its potential role in managing herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, including both oral and genital herpes. The primary rationale for its use is based on zinc’s antiviral, immunomodulatory, and wound-healing properties. Several small clinical studies and in vitro experiments have shown that zinc may inhibit HSV replication and accelerate healing of herpetic lesions. For example, topical zinc sulfate and zinc oxide preparations have demonstrated some benefit in reducing the duration and severity of cold sores in randomized controlled trials, and oral zinc supplementation has been linked to fewer recurrences in zinc-deficient individuals.

Despite these findings, the overall quality and quantity of evidence remain limited. Most studies have small sample sizes, short durations, or methodological weaknesses. Systematic reviews conclude that while topical zinc may provide modest benefit in healing time and symptom reduction, it should not replace established antiviral therapies. Oral zinc supplementation is only likely to be helpful in people with documented zinc deficiency. Side effects, such as skin irritation with topical zinc or gastrointestinal upset with oral forms, are possible.

In summary, zinc’s use in herpes management is scientifically motivated and supported by preliminary evidence, but robust, large-scale studies are lacking. The evidence is not strong enough to recommend zinc as a standalone treatment, but it may offer adjunctive benefits, especially in people with low zinc levels.
