Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been investigated for its potential to support oral health, including the treatment of halitosis (bad breath). The scientific basis for its use primarily lies in its antimicrobial properties. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from licorice root can inhibit the growth of various oral bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, which are known contributors to dental caries, periodontal disease, and malodor production. For instance, a study published in Phytotherapy Research (2006) found that licorice root extract significantly reduced the growth of halitosis-associated anaerobic bacteria.

Further, a few small clinical studies and pilot trials have explored licorice-based oral care products, such as lollipops or mouthwashes, and reported reductions in oral bacterial counts and improvements in breath odor. However, these studies are generally limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes lack of placebo controls. There is also some evidence from traditional medicine that licorice has been used to soothe oral inflammation, which could indirectly benefit oral odor.

Overall, while laboratory and preliminary human studies suggest a plausible mechanism and some promise for licorice root in supporting oral hygiene and reducing halitosis, the clinical evidence remains limited. Larger, high-quality clinical trials are necessary to confirm its efficacy and safety for this specific indication.
